Autumn News
Autumn Newsletter
We have been off to a busy start to the academic year over the past two months at SLOT2. We welcomed in some wonderful new students who are settling in really well and bringing their unique talents and personalities to our school community! We have also welcomed some new faces to the staff team this year! Steven is our new Woodwork and Art teacher, Ann has joined us as our City Connects Co-ordinator and Lisa is our new class teacher. Last but by no means least, we also welcome Zuma to the team – Zuma is our school dog who comes in on Fridays. We are so lucky to have them on our staff team.
City Connects
This year at our school, students are taking part in the City Connects Program as it rolls out into Secondary Schools in the area. Many of you will recognise City Connects from Primary Schools in the area. Ann will be working to link students up with services in the area which might be of help or interest to them. She is also working with students and staff to look at ways that we can bring interesting and supportive things into our school.
New Subjects
This year, we have introduced Woodwork to our curriculum! We got a new outdoor cabin, which is slowly morphing into a woodwork room. Students have begun all sorts of interesting projects as they prepare for Junior Cycle – they’ve even put a new floor into Nick’s shed – great work every one!
We are hoping to secure a kitchen to use to teach Home Economics as an exam subject, as we do not have one in our temporary building. In the meantime, Sonia has been working with students to make all sorts of delicious dishes in the canteen!
Junior Certificate Exams Success
A big congratulations goes out to our exam students of 2025 – who received amazing exam results this month! We are so proud of their hard work and achievements.
Visit from The Minister for Education and The Minister for Finance
As you know, our school has been waiting for many years for a real school building. In September, Minister for Finance Paschal Donoghue invited the Minister for Education, Helen McEntee, to visit our school. They met with staff, a student representative and the Board of Management to discuss what can be done to get the building project moving, which has been delayed now for many years. We are hopeful that following their visit, building of the new school can start in Spring 2026. Well done to our student representative, Daniel, for explaining so clearly why our students deserve fit for purpose accommodation.
Music Generation
Music continues with Emily. Students have taken a break from their DJing course of last year and this year, are getting to grips with keyboards, guitars and singing.
Gaisce – The President’s Award
This year, our school will participate in the Gaisce program for the first time. A big thank you to Suzi for volunteering to be our school Gaisce Pal. Suzi has started the process of getting students registered for the program and we can’t wait to see what our young people achieve.
